Severe Toothache at Night: Why It Happens and What To Do Right Now

You just woke up because your tooth is throbbing so badly you can’t sleep. You’re wondering if you can tough it out until morning — or if something is seriously wrong. Here’s the truth: a toothache that wakes you up at night is almost never something you should ignore.

☀️ vs 🌙 Why Does It Feel Worse at Night?

During the day you’re busy, distracted, and moving around. Your body’s natural painkillers are flowing and the pain feels manageable.

At night, you lie down. Blood flows to your head. The pain signals have nowhere to hide. What felt like a dull ache during dinner becomes unbearable throbbing at 2AM.

This isn’t in your head — it’s biology. And it means the problem is real.

🦷 What’s Actually Causing It?

🦠 Tooth Infection or Abscess

Bacteria reached the inside of your tooth. This is the most common cause of severe nighttime pain — and the most dangerous if you ignore it. Call us today.

💥 Deep Cavity

A cavity that has gotten close to the nerve hurts a lot — especially at night when there’s nothing to distract you. Call us today.

🔓 Cracked Tooth

A crack you might not even know you have. Every time you bite or drink something cold, sharp pain shoots through the tooth. Call us today.

😬 Teeth Grinding

Most people grind their teeth during sleep without knowing. Over time this creates a deep aching pain that builds up every night. Call us this week.

👇 What To Do Right Now

1. Take Ibuprofen — Not Aspirin

Ibuprofen (Advil) fights both pain AND inflammation. Take it as directed on the bottle. Never place aspirin directly on your tooth — it burns the tissue and makes things worse.

2. Rinse With Warm Salt Water

Half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Rinse gently for 30 seconds. This reduces inflammation and gives temporary relief. Repeat every few hours.

3. Cold Pack on Your Cheek

Hold a bag of ice or frozen vegetables against the outside of your cheek. 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. Numbs the area and reduces swelling.

4. Keep Your Head Elevated

Lying completely flat makes the throbbing worse. Prop your head up with an extra pillow to reduce blood pressure in the area.

5. Call Us at 9AM Sharp

We open at 9AM every single day including weekends. Call (425) 864-7600 first thing and tell us you have severe tooth pain. We will get you in the same day.

⚠️ Don’t Wait If You Have These Symptoms

These mean the infection is already spreading — call us immediately or go to the ER:

✗ Swelling in your jaw or face

✗ Fever alongside the tooth pain

✗ Difficulty swallowing

✗ Pain so severe you can’t function

The Mistake Most People Make

They take some ibuprofen, get a few hours of sleep, and tell themselves they’ll call the dentist next week. But by next week the infection has spread, the cavity has gotten deeper, and what could have been a simple filling is now a root canal — or worse.

The pain stopping doesn’t mean the problem went away. It means your body temporarily adapted. The damage is still there and it is still getting worse.
